Description

This is a medium-sized fine art print (60 x 40 cm) of an oil tempera painting by Paul MacDermot of a Barn Owl in Wiltshire.  Paul employs a unique method of building up layers of subtle colours using stensils and the result is a wonderful impression of the habitat of the owl, flying against willow trees unfolding their new leaves. We invested a couple of days in proofing the accurate reproduction of this large painting:  we used outdoor photography, indoor photography (with tungsten and daylight lighting) and scanning to determine the optimal reproduction of the wonderful texture and colours in the painting; we stitched together several images to output the resolution we needed for printing; and we used our highest quality, lightfast Epson printer inks to provide a best result on high quality paper.

This is an unlimited print run of the medium-sized print on Hahnemuhle Photorag 188gsm fine art paper.

Rookwood Art & Print captures artwork images in digital format using high resolution photography / scanning, or works from high quality digital images provided by the artist.  We maintain careful colour management throughout the print production process to reproduce the colours used by the artist as accurately as possible.  We produce fine art prints using the giclée method of digital printing to the Fine Art Trade Guild standards: they are printed at minimum 300 – 600dpi resolution using an industry leading Epson SureColor P9500 printer with premium UltraChrome Pro12 inks which provide exceptional 99% coverage of the PANTONE solid-coated colour standard; and they are printed on an archival, acid-free heavy-weight paper to suit the type of artwork, in order to produce long-lasting high quality prints.  Independently rated by Wilhelm Imaging Research Inc. the UltraChrome PRO12 Inks result in prints lasting up to 200 years for colour and 400 years for black-and-white.

Paul MacDermot

I’ve been asked to write something about myself and have wasted a lot of time trying to think of a way of building a grand edifice out of a very small pile of bricks. The best thing you can do is visit www.paulmacdermot.co.uk and you will see some examples of subjects I like to paint, and how I paint them. There is no great intellectual superstructure behind what I do. The painting is just a simple response to seeing something I really really like.
I was given a little formal art tuition at school when I was 14 and 15 by an art master who was of the old tradition…he’d been taught by Augustus John. I wanted to carry on in that vein but it came as a shock when I left school to discover that painting skills were not only no longer taught but were positively discriminated against. A lot of muddling through went on in my life after that, with the emphasis on ‘muddle’. I kept on painting and started professionally in 1987. I was lucky to meet the Scott Boltons, who gave me great encouragement and invited me to exhibit at The Summerleaze Gallery in Wiltshire. Many group, joint and solo exhibitions there followed over the years.
I have continued to develop my painting and learnt by doing it and by reading lots of books and looking at many paintings.
