Limpets at Aberfelin
A community of common limpets (patella vulgata) on brightly coloured algae-covered rock at low tide. Limpets have a ‘home spot that they return to again and again, which helped me find this place again at a different time of year. To my disappointment they had eaten all the lovely bright yellow algae and most of the pink coralline algae too – leaving a very dull coloured scene. High resolution photographic print on heavyweight digital archival paper. Unmounted print size 30 x 40 cms.

Maggie Studholme
In another life, I was parent to three growing sons, taught environmental sociology to undergraduate students and worried about the fate of the planet. I began taking photos as an escape and relaxation around 2009 and have been doing it ever since. With cataracts in both eyes as a result of an autoimmune disease, I could see the world more clearly through the lens. Now, with children grown into adults and cataracts removed, I have kept the habit of seeing the world around me through a viewfinder.
In this life, I live in Pembrokeshire and take photos all year round, indulging my love of beaches and their inhabitants whenever I have time. Spring and Autumn are my favourite seasons. These photos mostly represent extremes of scale and detail. For more than five years I have found myself focusing intently on tiny, abstract details in rocks and other environments, but have more recently been drawn to depict the local land-, sea- and sky-scapes at a much broader sweep and semi-abstract. My anxiety about the fate of the planet has been tempered (if only a little) since I have been here in Pembrokeshire by observing the capacity of coastal plants and animals to survive and flourish in this harshest of environments. I believe that nature is resilient and if given a chance can eventually recover from the depredations of human culture.
